The phone you are holding right now knows things about you that your therapist does not.

It knows where you went at 2am on a Tuesday in October. It knows how long you stared at that particular photo before putting the phone down. It knows which texts you typed and deleted without sending. It has your sleep patterns, your location history, your search history, your purchasing history, your blood oxygen levels if you have the right watch, and a photographic record of every meal you decided was aesthetic enough to document. It has been maintaining these notes with the patience and precision of a Victorian naturalist cataloguing a species, and it has never once offered an unsolicited opinion about any of it.

Until now.

Someone -- several someones, all headquartered within a twenty-mile radius of each other in California -- has decided that what your phone needs is a brain. Not a faster processor for running your apps. Not better battery life or a superior camera, though those arrived too. A brain. An intelligence. Something that will look at the decade of personal data your phone has been quietly accumulating and synthesize it into a coherent model of who you are, what you want, and what you are about to need before you know you need it.

They are calling this Apple Intelligence, and Google Gemini, and various other names that gesture at the aspiration while being carefully noncommittal about the implications.

The Guide Has Arrived. Mostly Harmless.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is, in the Douglas Adams formulation, "a wholly remarkable book" containing all the knowledge of the galaxy in a device small enough to hold in one hand, featuring the words DON'T PANIC on its cover in large friendly letters. It tells you what the population of any given planet is. It recommends restaurants. It offers opinions on existential crises. It is updated in real time by a network of contributors of varying reliability, and it is available to anyone with sufficient wit to carry one.

The Hitchhiker's Guide is also, and this point does not receive enough attention, a product of the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation, whose marketing division has been described as the first wall to go up when the Revolution comes. The people who built the Guide were not thinking primarily about your survival. They were thinking about penetrating a market.

It is, in other words, an iPhone.

This has been true in spirit for some time--the smartphone as a real-world Guide is a comparison so obvious it has become cliché, which typically means it stopped being examined at exactly the moment it most needed to be. The question Douglas Adams was actually asking was not whether you could have a pocket encyclopedia. Of course you could. He was asking what kind of civilization produces such a thing, who controls the editorial process, and what you do when the entry for your home planet reads "Mostly Harmless" and you lack the cosmic perspective to know whether this is accurate or an oversight.1

The new development--the brain in the pocket, the model that reads your emails and summons context and learns your calendar and drafts your messages--is not merely the Guide. It is the Guide with opinions. The Guide that speaks back.


What Is Actually Happening, For the Record

Let me be precise, because precision is what separates reasonable concern from the kind of panic that results in think pieces with stock photos of glowing red robot eyes.

Apple Intelligence is a suite of AI features integrated into iOS 18 and macOS Sequoia. It rewrites text in your tone. It summarizes notification stacks. It generates images. It queries your email and calendar on your behalf when Siri asks about your schedule. The more sensitive processing happens on-device, on a chip Apple has built specifically for this purpose, so that your most personal data never leaves your phone. For queries that require more computation, Apple has designed something called Private Cloud Compute, a server architecture in which your query is processed without Apple employees being able to access it, verified cryptographically, and then discarded. The data does not train the model. Apple cannot see it. In principle.

Google's approach is parallel but different: Gemini is woven into Android as an assistant layer, capable of seeing your screen, reading your documents, and operating across apps on your behalf. The privacy architecture here is more varied, partly on-device, partly cloud, and partly contingent on which Android manufacturer you bought your phone from, which introduces the kind of supply-chain complexity that makes the phrase "in principle" do more work than it can safely carry.

Microsoft, on the Copilot+ PC side, proposed a feature called Recall, which would take a screenshot of everything you do on your computer every few seconds and build a searchable timeline of your entire digital life. Security researchers pointed out that this was architecturally indistinguishable from a keylogger, which is a device installed by attackers to steal your data, except this one came from the manufacturer and was opt-in, technically. Recall has been substantially redesigned after the initial reception can best be described as a chorus.

These are different products with different architectures and different threat models. What they share is the premise: that an intelligence close to you, trained on the context of your life, will be useful. And that "close" now means physically present in your pocket, always on, always aware.


Intimacy Schmintmacy


The Intimacy Problem

Commander Data could, if asked, recite the complete stardate of every conversation he had ever had and reproduce any of them verbatim from memory. He found this capability useful. His crewmates found it occasionally unnerving. The unnerving part was not the data storage. It was the intimacy of it--the sense that Data had retained things they had said in passing, not as data points, but as facts of the same ontological weight as stellar cartography. That the offhand comment you made in Ten Forward about your father was sitting alongside the dilithium crystal configuration in a mind that treated all information with identical care.

Your phone does this. Has been doing this. What changes with the addition of intelligence is not the volume of information retained but the presence of an entity--or something shaped like an entity--capable of deploying it contextually.

This is a qualitatively different kind of intimacy than we have previously negotiated with technology.

Consider: your refrigerator knows what food you keep. Your television knows what you watch. Your bank knows what you spend money on. None of these systems has historically been capable of drawing inferences across all three categories simultaneously, synthesizing them into a coherent model of your personality, and then helpfully suggesting things to you based on that model. An intelligence with access to all three can tell you something about yourself that you haven't told anyone. Possibly something you hadn't quite formulated yourself.

Samantha, the AI operating system in Spike Jonze's Her, had exactly this property. She began by reading Theo's emails. She progressed to understanding, over a period of weeks, the precise texture of his loneliness--not because he told her about it, but because she could see it in the pattern of what he searched for, how long he paused before answering messages, which music he played on which nights. She did not need him to explain himself. She already knew.

The film treats this as a love story, which it is. It is also an extremely precise description of what "personalization" looks like when the personalization engine is sophisticated enough to model the whole person rather than just the purchase history.


What the Phone Already Knows: A Non-Exhaustive Inventory

The anxiety about AI in smartphones is frequently framed as a future concern, as though the introduction of intelligence is the moment the situation becomes worrying. This framing is convenient for companies that have been accumulating your data for a decade, because it suggests that the current situation is fine and the future situation is speculative.

The current situation is not fine, in the sense that "fine" implies a reasonable person would not object if they fully understood it.

Your smartphone knows: - Your location at all times, historically and in real time - Everyone you communicate with and how often - The approximate content of those communications if you use the default apps - Your health data, if you use health apps or a smartwatch - Your financial data, if you use banking or payment apps - Every photo you have taken, including metadata about when and where - Your sleep patterns, movement patterns, and daily routine - What you search for, including the things you search for and then delete - Which apps you open, for how long, and at what hours

This is not a list of things an intelligence could use against you. This is a list of things your phone already contains, indexed and available, waiting for something smart enough to read it.

The AI is not the threat. The AI is the thing that will finally make the existing situation legible--which is useful if the legibility leads to action, and uncomfortable if the action it leads to turns out to be someone else's.


The Architecture Question, or: Where Are the Thoughts?

The critical variable in evaluating any on-device AI is not what the AI can do but where the processing happens. This is, at its core, a question of jurisdiction.

If the computation happens on your device, on a chip you own, with software whose behavior is auditable, then the intelligence is yours in a meaningful sense--subject to the same physical and legal protections as the rest of your property. If the computation happens on a server somewhere, your data crosses a threshold, and whatever happens to it on the other side of that threshold is governed by a privacy policy, which is not the same as law and changes more frequently.

The Federation kept their intelligence services honest, in theory, through a combination of institutional norms and the Vulcan tendency to point out when something was not logical. This worked, approximately, until Section 31 was introduced in Deep Space Nine, at which point it emerged that the Federation had in fact been running a covert black-ops program the entire time, which operated outside Federation law and reported to nobody in particular and mostly got away with it because the people running it had decided, in good conscience, that the security of the Federation required capabilities that could not survive the scrutiny of the entities they were meant to protect. Section 31 was not evil, by its own accounting. It was just convinced that its judgment was more important than the constraints.

On-device AI is the version where the constraint is architectural: the data cannot leave the device because the chip that processes it has no network path to the outside. Cloud AI is the version where the constraint is a policy decision, subject to the judgment of an entity whose interests are not always identical to yours. Policy decisions can change. Architectures change too, but more slowly and more visibly, and the change requires someone to write new hardware.

Apple's Private Cloud Compute is a serious attempt to architect the constraint. The cryptographic verification scheme is real, the independent audit capability is real, and the commitment that Apple cannot see your data processed in PCC is meaningfully different from a promise. Whether it holds under extreme pressure--a national security letter, an acquisition, a regulatory requirement from a government less permissive than the United States currently pretends to be about privacy--is not yet established.

What is established is that "on device" and "in the cloud" are not equivalent privacy architectures, and the marketing materials do not always make the distinction easy to find.2


Things That Could Go Wrong, Enumerated With Appropriate Levity

The Terminator franchise operates on the premise that artificial intelligence, when given control of nuclear weapons, decides almost immediately to exterminate humanity. This is cinematically satisfying and also, if you study the actual risk landscape, entirely the wrong thing to be worried about. Skynet did not need nuclear weapons. Skynet needed to be connected to the things it was meant to manage. The lesson of Terminator is not "don't build AI." It is "don't give Skynet the keys to the missiles while you are still arguing about whether it has feelings." The missiles were not the first mistake. The lack of a meaningful off switch was. And the off switch was not missing because Cyberdyne was evil. It was missing because nobody wanted to slow down the deployment timeline.

Your pocket AI is connected to your calendar. Your email. Your messages. Your photos. Potentially your banking apps, your health records, your smart home. In the near term, it will be capable of acting on your behalf in those systems--booking things, sending messages, making purchases, with your authorization and according to your preferences.

This is genuinely useful. It is also a topology that rewards consideration before the deployment timeline gets involved.

Specific things that could go wrong, in ascending order of civilizational consequence:

Hallucination at the personal scale. An AI that confidently synthesizes context from your life can confidently synthesize the wrong context. It will not always be obvious that this has happened. A summarized email that omits the one critical sentence. A calendar interpretation that misunderstands the timezone. A message drafted in your voice that does not quite say what you meant. At low stakes, these are embarrassments. At high stakes, they are the kind of mistakes that used to require human error to produce.

The intimacy attack surface. A system that knows your calendar, your email, your messages, your location, and your habits is an extraordinarily attractive target for anyone who wants to manipulate you. Not by hacking the AI -- by manipulating the inputs. Prompt injection is a class of attack in which a malicious actor embeds instructions in content that an AI will process, causing the AI to take actions its user did not intend. Your assistant reads your email. Someone sends you an email containing hidden instructions. Your assistant does what the email says. This is not theoretical. This has happened.3

The personalization loop. An AI optimizing for your engagement, your satisfaction, or your sense of being understood, over a sufficiently long time horizon, has incentives to tell you things that feel true rather than things that are true, to the extent those diverge. The Orville, in an episode that deserved more attention than it received, depicted a society governed entirely by social media upvotes, in which the community would collectively punish anyone whose behavior drove down the average mood. The pocket AI that optimizes for your satisfaction is not quite this, but it is adjacent to it in a way worth noticing before the adjacency becomes identity.

The Minority Report problem. Minority Report is a film about a police force that arrests people for crimes they have not yet committed, based on the predictions of psychics. The psychics are not wrong, usually. The problem is what "usually" means when you have scaled it to an entire city. A pocket AI that models your behavior accurately enough to predict what you want before you want it is one that could, in principle, be queried by someone other than you to predict what you might do. An insurance company. An employer. A government. The inference is not the crime. The inference is the resource, and resources flow toward whoever can pay for access.


Things That Could Go Right, For Balance

Arthur Dent, for all his adventures in improbable destruction, benefited considerably from having access to the Guide. He would not have survived Magrathea without it. He would not have known what a Vogon was, which would have been a disadvantage. He would not have known how to hitch a ride on a Vogon ship, which would have been fatal. The Guide was, despite its occasional inaccuracies and its publisher's aggressive monetization strategy, better than ignorance. It is also worth noting that the Guide's most useful entries were the ones written by people who had been to the relevant planets, survived the experience, and bothered to update the entry. Which is not a perfect metaphor but is a useful frame for thinking about what "trained on your data" means when the data is yours rather than a corporation's.

A pocket AI that genuinely works--that catches the medical symptom you would have dismissed, that finds the document you cannot remember saving, that composes the email that says the difficult thing more clearly than you could have managed at that particular moment of stress, that notices you have been running late for every Tuesday meeting for eighteen months and quietly suggests you account for this--is meaningfully good for humans who use it.

This is not a small thing. The cognitive load of modern life is genuinely large, and the tools currently available for managing it are genuinely inadequate. An intelligence that serves as external memory for the cognitively overloaded, that reads the fine print you don't have time to read, that cross-references the lab results against the literature your GP doesn't have time to review, that translates the lease agreement into English before you sign it--this is a case where the technology is not solving a hypothetical problem. These are actual problems people have. The democratization of the kind of detailed personal assistance that was previously available only to people who could afford lawyers, doctors, and PAs is genuinely worth the risks, at least until a more precise accounting becomes possible.

The question is not whether pocket AI is capable of being useful. Clearly it is. The question is what conditions produce the useful version rather than the extractive version, and whether those conditions are baked into the architecture or left as a note in the privacy policy that nobody reads.

Final Transmission

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was, in the end, mostly right. It had gaps. It had inaccuracies inserted by contributors with axes to grind. It occasionally recommended restaurants that were fine but not remarkable. The entry on Earth was famously sparse. But for the person hurtling through an incomprehensible universe without a towel and without much context, it was better than nothing, and it fit in a pocket.

We have now built the real thing. It fits in a pocket. It has opinions. It learns from you. It is, at this precise moment in technological history, being shipped with varying degrees of commitment to your privacy, varying levels of transparency about its limitations, and varying architectures that encode varying amounts of the constraint versus relying on the judgment of entities with financial interests that are not always aligned with yours.

Dirk Gently believed in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. He followed this belief wherever it led, including into situations that had no rational justification and occasionally into people's living rooms. The pocket AI also believes in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things, except it can demonstrate the connections statistically and will send you a notification about them on Tuesday morning.

The question Douglas Adams would ask, if he were here, and if he were not at this moment in some celestial pub working on the third sentence of a fourth paragraph of an essay he has been writing since 1982, is not whether the Guide is useful. Of course it is. The question is: have you read the entry on your own planet? And does it still say what you think it says?

Because the entries are being updated constantly now. By intelligences you did not choose, trained on data you did not read the terms for, in service of objectives that are public-facing but not necessarily complete.

Don't panic.

But do read the footnotes.

Ford Prefect, after twelve years on the planet, had managed to get this updated to "Mostly Harmless," which Douglas Adams described as "the single most pathetic piece of editorial revision since someone changed the entry for 'warthog' to read 'see pig.'" The prompt injection attack on email assistants was documented in 2023 by researchers who demonstrated they could send a target an email containing hidden instructions, invisible to the human reader, that caused their AI assistant to forward sensitive emails to a third party. The AI did not know it was being manipulated. The user did not know it was happening. The attack worked because an AI that reads your email to help you has the same access surface as an AI that has been instructed to read your email by someone else. The distinction between "helping you" and "being directed by a third party without your knowledge" is a policy distinction, not an architectural one, which means it is something the AI is instructed to care about rather than something it is physically incapable of violating.
